Visit the Julie Thomas Memorial Library

Morganville

Julie Thomas, Morganville City Clerk for many years, died from a terminal illness in February 2000. One of her last wishes was for her extensive collection of books to be placed in a library for others to enjoy in Morganville. Memorials to Julie and other donations were designated to fulfill Julie’s request. The Morganville City Council and the Board of Directors for the library began work on Jan. 30, 2001 to bring this request to reality.

Many months of preparation took place with the North Central Library in Manhattan assisting our organization. Local volunteers remodeled a building owned by the city and others started the enormous task of cataloging over 1,300 of Julie’s books. Area businesses and individuals donated furnishings, money, and books. A grand opening was held on July 28, 2001 with a large crowd attending, including Julie’s daughters.

The library has provided the opportunity for summer reading programs for the youth of the community and a monthly story time. For example, children have participated at story time by writing to soldiers and sending them “care packages.” Internet service, interlibrary loan, videos, talking books, and magazines are offered to the public. The library is located at 108 South Main Street and is open Mondays: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesdays: 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays: 10:00 a.m.- 12p.m.
